Old man’s beard, Pahiatua

Project Overview

Kaitiaki o Ngahere works alongside Horizons Regional Council to control old man’s beard within the Tararua District. This necessary control helps to prevent the spread into the Tararua range including their wonderful forest parks.

Old man’s beard (Clematis vitalba) is a highly invasive weed species that grows rapidly and forms dense masses that dominate and smother natives. Due to its fast-growing nature and ability to spread via water and air, it’s crucial to prevent the spread into valuable ecosystems.

Using manual and chemical applications of weed control, combined with a long history and knowledge of controlling old man’s beard, Kaitiaki o Ngahere has successfully controlled dedicated sections. We continue to make further progress while accomplishing the goals for Horizons.
